10 TED Talks for Entrepreneurs

A fellow entrepreneur gave me a slight nudge recently that motivated me to post this blog.  I think you will certainly find value in it as it incorporates some of the best minds of the 21st century.

Remember…..    The secret to learning as an entrepreneur is to mix equal parts of inspiration and perspiration. Hard work without a vision is futile, while a great idea without execution is similarly worthless. In these TED talks, you’ll find the inspiration you need and the know-how to get it done.

  1. Seth Godin on Standing Out: What makes you so special? Seth Godin’s talk is all about why people just ignore the ordinary. In order to stand out, Godin says, you must be either bad or bizarre. Boring will not bring you success.
  2. Alex Tabarrok on How Ideas Trump Crises: Economist Alex Tabarrok’s talk celebrates the practice of idea sharing. He explains that through free trade and globalization, we are now sharing more than ever to create a community that’s more healthy and prosperous than before.
  3. Dean Kamen on Inventing and Giving: Get inspired by this master of invention with more than 150 patents under his belt. In this talk, Dean Kamen discusses the Segway, and takes a look at even more big ideas, including portable energy and water purification to be used in developing countries.
  4. Richard St. John’s 8 Secrets of Success: How does success happen, and why do people succeed? Richard St. John knows, and he’ll tell you in this talk. Watch the video to learn the lessons of success.
  5. Tony Robbins: As an entrepreneur, your choices make a difference. You can impact the future of your business, an industry, a community. In this talk, life coach Tony Robbins examines the invisible forces that motivate your actions.
  6. Derek Sivers: How to Start a Movement: Do you want to make an impact? Derek Sivers can show you how. Explore this talk, and you will see how movements really get started — with the power of two.
  7. Itay Talgam: Lead Like the Great Conductors: Entrepreneurs must exhibit excellent leadership and management skills. You work much like a conductor — orchestrating different parts to ensure that they all come together like they should. In this talk, Itay Talgam examines how orchestra conductors can provide entrepreneurs with crucial lessons in leadership.
  8. Gary Vaynerchuk: Do What You Love: Gary Vaynerchuk insists that there are no excuses for not doing what you love. If you’re a dreamer, but not quite yet a doer, Gary’s TED talk can give you the shot in the arm you need.
  9. Alexis Ohanian: How to Make a Splash in Social Media: Make social media work for your venture with the guidance of Alexis Ohanian. Using the example of a humpback whale’s Web stardom, you’ll learn how to master memes and marketing in social media.
  10. Richard Branson’s Life at 30,000 Feet: Find inspiration from Richard Branson, the entrepreneur who turned a record shop into the Virgin empire. This talk examines his career, near-death experiences, and some of his motivations.

I hope you enjoyed these 10 TED talks on Entrepreneurship.  If you have any others that you think should be added to the list please share by leaving a comment.

Economics 101 – What are You Worth?

Wow! What a hiatus. Last month was an undoubtedly action packed one. I took a trip to Paris, got engaged, and started participating in a new flag football league all on top of the business activities I normally partake in. Of course the blogging suffered a bit due to “all the activity” and of course a small mishap which had my blog temporarily deactivated. However, the good news is…. I am back!

So today I wanted to touch on something that has been on my mind a lot lately, Economics. I guess I am really writing this now because of a certain essence that seems to pervade the internet, the television, heck the world. This essence manifests itself as a blatant misunderstanding of Economics and economic principles. It is an essence that can be summed up in a mentality known all too well as “The Get Rich Quick Mentality” or “The Something For Nothing Mentality”.

Now, it is understood that this type of thinking may never go away, but perhaps it can be curbed a bit through people talking about it or blogging about it. Who knows?  So hopefully I can save someone some valuable time by helping them realize that they shouldn’t start something if they don’t really intend to be in it for the long haul and put in the necessary work (and yes anything worth doing requires work). In addition it would be nice if this post could help save someone, anyone from quitting too soon…all because they felt their expectations were not being instantly met. (Hello…..things take time!!!)

So, here it is….a pithy point to keep in mind or to share with a friend/acquaintance who is suffering from this dreadful mentality…..

It is…that you can’t get without giving!!!! Seriously, there is actually a law of economics which irrevocably controls the system that neither recognizes nor tolerates, at least not for long, getting without giving. So….what this means is, that there really is only one dependable method for legally accumulating and holding true riches, and this without a doubt is…………….. by providing useful service.

Now how does one provide useful service and why is it important you ask? Answer….  first understand Economics! Which you can find a bit more about in this neat little video.  To your success!

The Terror Barrier

I went to an event last week where I had the pleasure of seeing Bob Proctor, a 75 yr old millionaire and world renowned entrepreneur who carries himself like a youthful 25yr old.

It was a pretty phenomenal experience and EXTREMELY valuable, and I stress extremely because I personally walked away with powerful ideas and insights from an event which usually costs anywhere from $500 – $1,000 all for free!!!

One of the main ideas that I walked away with and really want to share with you, was this idea of the “Terror Barrier”.  An imaginary barrier that many have but probably won’t experience until they try to achieve something great.  If you are one of those who have ever been on the hunt of bigger and better things you probably have very intimate knowledge of what I am talking about.  So, this barrier usually appears when we are just about to make some critical gains in our endeavoring that would definitely set us apart from the also-rans, but….we stop short.  And of course this happens because of an internal block or fear we have, or because of a rule or paradigm which is programmed deep within us.  The barrier manifests itself in self-sabotage, excuse making, circular arguments or rationalizing with ourselves as to why we aren’t doing or can’t do the activities absolutely necessary for our break through towards our success.

So, what’s the solution?  Well, it’s a change in your mental paradigm so you can ultimately change your behaviors.  How do you change your paradigm?  Change your thinking!  How do you change your thinking?  First……START THINKING, (and it’s important you don’t mistake mental activity for thinking), then decide to change what you put into your mind.  Learn, Grow, Challenge yourself and in so doing be selective and very vigilant with what you read, watch, listen to, and then of course with what you think.  It’s as simple as that.

[Disclaimer – This post is written soley for those interested in doing extraordinary things.  If this is not you, please disregard NOW.  This post will self-destruct in 25 seconds……no not really, 🙂  I hope you are smiling!]

Your Personality Sucks

I was surfing the net last night and I came across this blog by Rohit Bhargava.  Initially glancing through hist posts I was attracted to one tab in particular.  So I clicked on it and took a good look through it and began reading some of his postings for that blog (because he has two) and sure enough I came across his book which he titled Personality Not Included (PNI for short).  The book caught my attention because it wasn’t too long ago when I was listening to some Napolean Hill audio tapes in my car (I am geek what can I say), which incidentally was focused on personality and how important it is to ones success.

Interestingly the Napolean Hill personality bit was a slightly different in its recommendations as it was primarily talking about the importance of positive mental attitude, tactfulness, and being courteous to our peers and customers in order to secure more business and in turn be more successful.   Now Rohit’s bit on personality was more about how it is vital in this day and age for your business to have a personality of its own, and how authenticity is key if it is to become and/or remain successful.

The cool thing I captured in being open to both ideas on personality is that basically if your business is not doing good or if your career is going nowhere fast, it’s probably because of your personality.  So in an attempt to be respectfully brutal in my honesty….if your business or career sucks……. it’s probably because your personality sucks.

So…. what are you waiting for?  Start working on your personal and organizational personality.

Go Get Started!!

Pretty neat stuff… I just received a nice little article from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation that essentially says how now is the time to be considering your own start up BECAUSE WE ARE IN A RECESSION.(Now that sounds a little crazy…. I know)  But seriously though..It also gives us some researched insight on how most companies that have done so in a recession or bear market were actually more likely to survive long term than those companies which started when the times were good.  Heck!… why am I rephrasing this…just read below  if you are interested and follow their link to get the complete article and then when you are done…Go get started on your business for Pete’s Sake!!  We want you to make more money, increase your assetts, grow your cashflow, define your  own life, and all that other good stuff that comes with calling the shots.  Go Get Started!

More than Half of Fortune 500 Companies Were Founded in
Recession or Bear Market, Kauffman Foundation Study Finds

“A new study by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation finds a silver lining in today’s challenging economic times: Recessions can spur entrepreneurship, which leads to the creation of much-needed new jobs.
The study The Economic Future Just Happened found that more than half of the companies on the 2009 Fortune 500 list were launched during a recession or bear market, along with nearly half of the firms on the 2008 Inc. list of America’s fastest-growing companies.
The report also suggests a broader economic trend, with job creation from startup companies proving to be less volatile and sensitive to downturns when compared to the overall economy.
The complete study is posted on www.kauffman.org.”

Billionaire Mentor Next Door

online_mentoring

It’s pretty rare to get an Olympic Gold Medal, wouldn’t you say? Only 1,210 Americans have received one. It’s unusual to climb Mt. Everest, too: Just 2,300 people have done that. But there’s an even rarer category: The number of billionaires. No more than 1,125 people in the world can claim that distinction.

My friend, Bill Bartmann, did just that. Now keep in mind that this group of 1,125 people includes people who had major help along the way: Many were born with it, inherited it, or had every advantage while growing up.

In the history of billionaires, Bill Bartmann stands alone. He’s the ONLY former homeless person and gang member ever to have made a billion dollars. That’s right, Bill went from eating out of dumpsters and living under a bridge viaduct, to having after-tax, take-home pay in a single year of more than $100 million and being listed as the 25th richest person in America.

Here’s where it gets extremely interesting: Bill is willing to coach individuals…and that includes YOU on how to succeed in business.

Seriously, what can you learn from someone whose daddy died and left him a billion? (The answer is…probably not much) But it’s totally different with Bill Bartmann: He worked in a slaughterhouse. He was an alcoholic at age 17. And at one point Bill was paralyzed from the waist down. Yet Bill discovered a DIFFERENT way of thinking and acting that enabled him to overcome all of that, and become a self-made billionaire.

After scaling the highest peaks in the business world and getting his fill of toys like $25 million aircraft, what’s Bill up to now? Well, seemingly…he has one current passion: Showing others his special techniques for overcoming any challenge and being as successful as they want to be. An aspiration truly respected and applauded by the Educated Entrepreneur.

Do you think Bill might know a few things YOU could use to overcome your own challenges? What if you could get his thoughts on dozens of business topics?

Well…it appears you can. Bill has launched a one-of-a-kind online service, called his “Billionaire Business System”. From the looks of it…this is not some one-size-fits-all deal. (thank goodness) Instead, Bill has built a mentoring tool that provides you with laser-targeted advice on many individual topics.

If you are already running a business but not sure what’s the best way to secure financing for your next stage of growth or if you are not even sure if business is right for you? Bill will help. He has various video sessions on these specific subjects alone.

In fact, the Billionaire Business System currently has almost two dozen topics, and is constantly growing.

I strongly recommend that you take a look at Bill’s system and see for yourself how it can remove whatever roadblocks are in your way to greater business success. You can find it by going to: BILL BARTMANN ENTERPRISES

Name me anywhere else on the planet that you can get specific, useful, and comprehensive business-building advice from a self-made billionaire? That’s OK, I can’t think of any, either.

The sooner you have somebody like Bill Bartmann in your corner, advising you on business success, the sooner you can sit back and bask in your own dreams coming true. Right?!

Well, hopefully you can get inspired by this guy. He truly has “been there done that”…and the chances are really good that whatever challenges you have, Bill’s been there, and found a way to overcome them. Seriously consider giving Bill a chance to show you how to side step many mistakes on your path to the top and visit His Website. He may just be the Billionaire mentor we all need.

Fear is a Portal to Your Success (The 6th Element)

On the last post I spoke of the 5th element of achieving success, which was of course, doing what you love, or having a passion about what you are doing to make your living.  The reason why this element is so important is because it adds velocity to your momentum of success.  Here’s what I mean;  when you love what you do, usually, you are always thinking about that passion or interest anyway…it comes natural to you..Your mind doesn’t want to think about anything else….so the “You become what you think about” way to success, mentioned in my last post, is mostly handled.  Now, obviously, the other 3 ways are up to acquiring a good financial sense.

The crucial point here is; one of the most important hindrances of success is diluted when one loves what they do…..    What is this hindrance?..

The hindrance of fear.   When you truly believe in something, the fear you would normally have in performing the acts needed to successfully execute, are made more tolerable, thus increasing the chances of you actually doing them.

This is so important because, fear, can pretty much be seen as the biggest obstacle to most people’s dreams.  Once we as individuals or business leaders decide to take on our fears, to step into them, and challenge them, we ultimately take a step into the light of our success.

A good way to look at Fear is as a portal to your success.  It is in essence, my 6th element of success.

P.S  a great book that I read on Fear is  called:

Feel the Fear . . . and Do It Anyway (r)  Check it out.

Love what you do + Do what you Fear = Success

It’s In the Numbers

I had a conversation with a friend earlier today about her new network marketing business involving the sale of chocolate, and the funniest thing happened.  I asked her how much money she was to get paid for every sale she made, and she said “she didn’t care” because she will make money regardless.  Now, I write this because I am a very optimistic person and yet I am also a pragmattic who leans towards a business school of thought which condones one having a minimum understanding of the fundamentals of commerce.   What are these fundamentals?… Numbers.

The numbers tell us if we are profitable, if we are having success, if we should continue on the same path, throw in the towel, try something new.  As entrepreneurs, business people, or just ordinary individuals looking to move in a certain direction in life, The NUMBERS are our guiding light.

Do you know your Numbers?  How much more money do you need to be determined in your own eyes as “successful”?  How much money are you actually being paid for your time and effort?  How many more sales calls do you need to make to reach you quota or goal?  How many years do you still need to work before you can retire? How many more ours of education do you need to be considered knowledgable?

It is my belief that if we don’t have something to measure our exchanges of services & products, our successes, or our actions by, then it will be difficult to actually know which direction we are actually moving.   If you want to change your circumstances or move up in the business world,  be sure to have a way to calculate your direction.   It’s in the numbers.

Do You Know Your Numbers?

A man without a goal is like a ship without a rudder.
